Staying connected on the water with a VHF Radio Case

Big Green Adventures is a watersports school, offering surfing, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kayaking, coasteering and other water-based activities in a popular part of North Cornwall. The school was founded in 2011 by Dale, who has spent years surfing and coaching around the world. He’s also a Trainer Assessor for Surf Lifesaving Great Britain (SLSGB) and Surfing England, helping to train and assess the next generation of coaches and lifeguards.  In this blog, Dale discusses how his profession and business rely on staying connected out on the water.

At Big Green Adventures, our coaches spend their days in and around the water, from teaching surf lessons to leading stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and kayaking sessions along the coast. Safety is always at the heart of what we do, and communicating with our team while we’re out on the water is vital to keep every session running safely and smoothly.

That’s why we always use Aquapac VHF radio cases to protect our coach radios. We’re also super stoked to be testing Aquapac’s new VHF cases as part of our everyday coaching kit.

Keeping VHF Radios protected without losing access

For our coaches, a VHF radio is an essential piece of communication equipment when we’re out on the water. The challenge is protecting the radio from water, spray, and splashes while keeping it easily accessible when it’s needed.

This is where the Aquapac VHF radio case really comes into its own. With Aquapac’s leading technology, the waterproof case keeps the radio dry (most cases are IPX8 rated to 10 metres) without impacting the radio’s functionality, allowing our coaches to operate it without removing it from the case. That’s a huge benefit in a busy watersports environment.

If a coach needs to communicate with another team member, they can simply use the radio through the case rather than stopping what they’re doing, opening a case, and exposing the radio to the elements.

For us, choosing the right waterproof VHF radio case is sometimes a toss-up between waterproof protection and ease of access. Aquapac’s do both. That’s the real selling point.

A waterproof VHF case that’s easy to carry

Another feature we really like about the Aquapac VHF cases is how they can be carried.

The cases come with straps, allowing our coaches to attach the radio securely to themselves in a range of positions while they’re working. They also fit neatly into our buoyancy aids, keeping the radio close and accessible without getting in the way.

That’s particularly useful for our paddle sports sessions. Our instructors need to keep their hands free to focus on their groups, their equipment and their surroundings, so having a waterproof VHF radio case that is secure and conveniently placed within reach makes a real difference.

Testing VHF Radio Cases in real watersports conditions

We’ll be putting the Aquapac VHF radio cases through their paces across all our water activities, including surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and coasteering. 

For a watersports school, good equipment needs to be practical and waterproof. Our coaches need equipment that works with them, and doesn’t get in the way of delivering a great session.

The Aquapac VHF radio cases reassure our coaches that their radios are protected from water, spray, and splashes while still allowing them to communicate quickly and easily when they need to.
